A TEACHER'S GUIDE TO TINY SNAIL
By Tammy Carter Bronson, Author/Illustrator

SYNOPSIS

Tiny wants to live under the Maple Tree, but she cannot reach it in one night. Armed only with her friend's advice, Tiny crawls into a land with no shade. She battles sun, rain and mud, but Tiny always says thank you. When Tiny finally reaches the tree, she attains more than her goal: she learns to say thank you to herself! Tiny's inspirational journey teaches children the importance of courage, perseverance and gratitude. The final four pages weave together story with educational material about snails.

THEMES

Tiny Snail can be used to build character in the classroom by teaching children how to set and work toward goals. The book can also help explain the importance of self-esteem, perseverance and right attitude.

Challenge students to SET A GOAL for them selves then ask them to write a step-by-step PLAN to achieve their goal. Tiny Snail's goal was to reach the Maple Tree. Mother Turtle told her to go a shorter distance first. Tiny accomplishes her goal by traveling short distances everyday. First she went to the dandelions, then to the rock, then to the tree.

Working towards a goal can be difficult because sometimes there are setbacks. When things don't go the way you plan, you need PERSEVERANCE. Tiny Snail had perseverance. She did not give up on her goal even when there were great obstacles to overcome. Tiny focused on one step at a time towards her goal (so she did not get overwhelmed), and when she met someone who was unhelpful, she was not discouraged (she chose to politely ignore Lazy Lizard).

On the first page of the story, Tiny does not have much SELF-ESTEEM. She thinks she does not have the ability to reach her goal. Mr. Squirrel encourages her to try anyway. Tiny discovers self-esteem means (1) having the courage to try, (2) believing in yourself when things get difficult, and (3) remembering to reward yourself for a job well done.

It is easier to persevere and to have good self-esteem if we have the right ATTITUDE. Tiny Snail has an attitude of GRATITUDE! When Lazy Lizard was rude to her, she decided to find a reason to be grateful rather than to feel discouraged. She realized the sun was rising fast and if Lizard had not come along she might have been caught out in the sunlight. Meeting Lizard reminds her to go to bed so she says, "Thank you, Lizard, for reminding me it's time for bed." Being grateful helps Tiny focus on what is positive about her situation instead of what is negative.
